As we usher in a new year, Mecklenburg County Land Use & Environmental Services Agency (LUESA) will also be shepherding in a new building code. Beginning on January 1, 2019, the 2018 N.C. Building Code family will effectively replace all state building codes in North Carolina, except for the electrical code, which has been active since June of 2018.
The county has been and will continue accepting projects under the existing 2012 code and the 2018 code through December 31st. However, all projects that have not completed the plans review and issuance process in its entirety will be subject to the 2018 building code exclusively. Mecklenburg County has suggested all large-scale and residential projects utilizing the 2012 code be submitted by the close of the day August 31, 2018, while small commercial projects were given a suggested deadline of October 1, 2018. If submitting under the 2012 code, plans must be approved, and a complete permit application must be submitted by 4:45 pm on December 28th to meet the December 31st deadline. Any projects that are still in the review queue or issuance phase must complete a Revision to Approved Plans (RTAP) OR submit under the 2018 building code.
The permitting experts at National Permit Expediters can help advise and navigate the submittal process during this time of change. Whether you are struggling with an entirely new submittal or have a pending submittal caught in the “no man’s land,” failing to be approved and issued before the close of the year, we would love to put our two decades of permitting experience to work for you!
